Are We Loving Our Dogs to Death? How the Pet Food Industry Needs to Change
We love our dogs. They’re not just pets—they’re family. They’re there for us on our worst days, offering unconditional love without asking for much in return. We want the best for them, but what if the very things we trust to care for them are doing more harm than good? It’s a question I never thought I’d ask, but after losing two of my dogs in just three weeks, I had no choice but to confront it.
Marley and Dreamer were my world. They were healthy, happy, and fed what I thought was the best kibble available. But within weeks of opening a new bag of food, Marley was gone. And then Dreamer followed. The grief was unbearable, but what made it worse was the gnawing feeling that their deaths might have been preventable. When I started researching, I uncovered a harsh reality: the pet food industry isn’t as transparent or trustworthy as it seems.
Most of us don’t question the food we feed our dogs. We trust the colorful bags with smiling dogs on the front and labels that promise “premium” or “natural” ingredients. But what’s inside those bags often tells a different story. Hidden recipe changes, synthetic fillers, and poor-quality ingredients are all too common. And the regulations surrounding pet food? They’re shockingly lax. Companies aren’t required to disclose changes in their recipes, which means that what worked for your dog one month might make them sick the next.
It’s a hard pill to swallow, especially for someone like me who thought I was doing everything right. But this isn’t about pointing fingers or placing blame. It’s about education, accountability, and change. We have to start asking hard questions about the food we’re feeding our pets. Are the ingredients truly high-quality? Are the manufacturing processes safe? And most importantly, are we making decisions based on convenience or what’s truly best for our dogs?
I’m not here to scare anyone or make you feel guilty. Trust me, I’ve been there, and I know how overwhelming it can be. But I believe that love means more than just good intentions. It means taking the time to learn, to question, and to demand better. Our dogs give us their everything—shouldn’t we do the same for them?
If you’re ready to join me on this journey, stick with me. This blog is about more than just kibble. It’s about creating a world where dogs can live long, healthy lives without suffering from preventable diseases. Together, we can make a difference—for our dogs and the people who love them.
