What I Learned from a Lifetime of Loving Dogs

Some people measure their lives in milestones like graduations, weddings, and career achievements. I measure mine in dogs. From my grandpa’s long-lived German Shepherds to my current pack, dogs have been my greatest source of joy, comfort, and growth. Over the years, they’ve taught me more about life than I ever thought possible.

Growing up, dogs were always part of the family. My earliest memories include my grandpa’s pride in his Shepherds, who lived into their 20s—a feat that seems nearly impossible today. Then there was Molly, my first heartbreak, who carried me through my awkward childhood years before we lost her far too soon. Every dog since has left a unique pawprint on my heart, teaching me lessons about love, resilience, and health.

One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is about unconditional love. No matter how my day is going, my dogs have always been there, wagging tails and all. They’ve shown me what it means to be present and to love without expectation. Their loyalty has carried me through some of my hardest days.

Another lesson is about grief and resilience. Losing a dog is one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced. Every goodbye feels like a piece of my heart is being taken away, but every new hello reminds me that love is worth the risk. Each loss has made me more determined to do better—for my dogs and for others.

Finally, they’ve taught me about the importance of health. Watching my dogs thrive or struggle has shown me just how much their wellbeing depends on the choices I make for them. Nutrition, exercise, and even mental stimulation all play a role in giving them the long, happy lives they deserve.

This blog is my way of honoring everything my dogs have taught me. It’s about sharing their stories, lessons, and what I’ve learned along the way. If you’ve ever had a dog who changed your life, you’re in the right place. Let’s celebrate their love and learn how to care for them in the best way possible.
